Many hikers feel that since they carry a gps and cell phone they do not need to carry a compass and a map. This is far from the truth! A gps unit is a very handy item for tracking your course and figuring out your position, but they are not fool proof, and every hiker should have a plan for that worse case scenario. Carrying a magnetic compass or having a compass watch just in case your gps fails is vital. Every hiker should at all times have a compass and map in their camping backpack on every hike.
