It always makes me sad to hear of lost hikers in the wilderness who were depending on a gps alone to guide them safely out of the woods again. The art of reading a map and compass definitely seems to be going by the wayside as people become more and more dependent on technology. Many hikers now head out without a map of the area they are visiting let alone a decent magnetic compass to back up their gps unit in case of failure. Of course most of the time this is not an issue, but not having camping survival gear with you can one day cost you more than most hikers realize.
