If you are like me you have seen many people hiking who are carrying one or two what looks like ski poles. At first this baffled me, but eventually I was having a trail conversation with one of these individuals so I got curious and asked. These were actually hiking poles or trekking poles as some may call them. Either way the point of the pole is to help the hiker maintain balance and remove some of the stress from the knees, especially when hiking in hilly country. These poles come in aluminum or carbon fiber so that they are exceptionally strong yet very lightweight for the hiker to carry.
