Many people buy a camping tent based on how many people the model claims it will sleep and then they are disappointed when there is barely just enough room for those people to place their sleeping bags. When many camping tents are rated for how many people it will sleep it is based on the maximum number of people it will sleep with no gear inside with them. For a backpacker who wants minimal weight in their packs this is usually an accurate way to shop for your tent. But for others it is better to base your tent size on the square footage available and figure for each camper twice the size of their sleeping bag for their needs.
