Whether you are going for a short day hike or a extended backpacking trip there are certain items you should always carry in your camping backpack for safety because an accident can happen at any time. Of course many hikers know to carry plenty of fresh clean water and some snacks for the hike but you should also include at least a simple first aid kit as well as the materials to start a emergency fire. With the GPS making navigation easy many hikers depend on these gadgets but you should always also carry a map of the area as well as a compass. Of course these will do you no good if you do not know how to use them so make a New Years Resolution to learn how. It is not only a great skill but can be very fun as well.
