When setting up your coleman camping tent there are a few things a seasoned veteran of the outdoors will tell are important to consider. Some of the obvious things are to not camp too close to creeks and streams. The water can rise in the night from a thunderstorm upriver that you did not even get, and can flood you out of your camp. You should also be wary of what is above your camping tents, loose branches and dead trees can fall in high winds potentially waking you up in not a good way. Also if flat ground is not available, aim your feet downhill, as you do not want to be sleeping on your head, or rolling onto your tent mate in the night.

Packing a camping backpack for an extended stay in the outdoors can be challenging if you have never done it before. Many hikers develop a system over time that they know will work for them, but there are many things that are very similar for most everyone. Generally pack the things you will not need during the day toward the bottom of the pack. This will include things like your camping tents, sleeping bags, and changes of clothes. Toward the middle pack your camping stove, bulk of your food, and mess kit. While at the top of your pack keep your trail snacks, rain jacket, and other things you might need along the way. This is the general layout of my backpack, and once you have more miles into your adventures you will have a system you prefer of your own.

Gerber multitools are one of the handiest items any camper can carry with them on their belt or in their camping backpack. These handy tools made from a combination of aluminum and stainless steel are rugged and can get any job done around camp that is needed. These tools are the same as what our armed forces carry into battle, so you can count on them for their sharp blade and good grip on the pliers since the military does. These camping tools make great gifts for the outdoorsman in your life, but don’t forget to pick up one for yourself at the same time.

Much of the middle United States has received a lot of rain lately and the extra moisture in the ground may change a little about how you camp. If you do not already use a camping cot you might want to consider using one to avoid sleeping so close to the damp ground. You might want to also consider adding more camping chairs and camping tables to your things to take so that you have more places to sit and place things so that they are up off the ground. Just because it is wetter out does not mean you have to stay home. The extra rain makes waterfalls bigger, native plants and mushrooms go, and it really greens up the outdoors for you to enjoy.

School will be out for the summer in about one month in many districts and many parents are starting to arrange for summer camp to keep the kids busy when it does. Many camps offer overnight stays and require kids to bring a few essentials from home to do so. The big item most parents need to remember is a comfortable sleeping bag. Coleman sleeping bags have been the bag of choice for many generations of parents sending their kids off to summer camp. With today’s styles and even kids sleeping bags made just for them it is easier than ever to get the right sleeping bag for summer camp.

Coleman camping chairs are some of the most useful pieces of camping gear you will ever had to your supplies. These chairs are so comfortable and easy to use you will catch yourself using them even when you are not camping. These camping chairs are great for using at the park, on fishing trips, and even at the baseball game. Many of them even have handy drink holders built into the arm of the chair so you can take your cold drink out of your Coleman cooler and keep it in your cup holder while you cheer on the action or chat with your campmates.

If you spend a lot of time in the remote outdoors camping and backpacking it is highly recommended that you and everyone in your group take at least a basic first aid course. Carrying a camping first aid kit will not do you much good if when the need arises you do not know how to use anything within the kit but a band-aid. Many areas have first aid courses available and in some places a wilderness specific course can be found so that when an emergency arises in the backcountry you will be prepared on how to use the outdoor first aid kit you carry in your camping supplies.

Many hikers feel that since they carry a gps and cell phone they do not need to carry a compass and a map. This is far from the truth! A gps unit is a very handy item for tracking your course and figuring out your position, but they are not fool proof, and every hiker should have a plan for that worse case scenario. Carrying a magnetic compass or having a compass watch just in case your gps fails is vital. Every hiker should at all times have a compass and map in their camping backpack on every hike.

Going for a hike can seem like a big hassle when you have a small toddler. Strollers are too big and cumbersome for non-paved trails and just a general pain to use. While trying to walk with your child never works out since they wear out easily and you end up carrying them only wearing yourself out in the process. A great solution is to carry them on your back in a camping backpack styled just for them. These handy camping kids carriers will allow you to easily carry your child on extended hikes with no strain or fatigue for you. Many have extra pockets for snacks and even a sun shade for the little one.

The choice between a internal frame camping backpack or a external frame backpack is really just a matter of personal preference. There are those who will tout one type of pack over the other, but the arguments for or against one style is something you need to decide based on your comforts and needs.
Both backpacks will hold all your camping supplies easily if you buy the proper size for the time you plan on staying hiking and for the camping gear you plan on taking. Some feel it is easier to pack the external pack, yet many feel it is more cumbersome on the trail. While others prefer the better fitting internal frame backpack, and others feel it is too warm sitting on their back. If you can try both styles before you make your backpack choice. Being completely comfortable when you go camping can make the difference between having a good time or a bad time. For me camping sleeping pads are just not enough cushioning from the ground while I sleep and camping air mattresses are too much. A Coleman camping cot is what I prefer to for a good nights sleep when camping out. A camping cot lifts me off the ground so that I do not feel the cool dampness of the ground and it also provides just enough support for my lower back, which tends to give me trouble now that I am getting older.

If you are headed out on a very long backpacking trip then weight quickly becomes a issue. The longer you stay out in the wilderness the more food you will need to carry, and you may want to consider shaving some weight from your camping gear to accommodate the weight of the food. One significant area that can save you on weight is your choice of camping tents. A great solution for a light backpacking tent would be a bivy sack; these are an actually just waterproof bag, which slip over your sleeping bag, and has a loop over the area of your head to raise the sack off your face. With easy set up and very little weight these are great alternatives to a tent when backpacking.

There are some great recipes available for campers who would like to use a camping dutch oven when they are in the outdoors. If you are tired of cooking on a coleman camping stove or directly over a fire on a grill you should give a dutch oven a try on your next trip. I have found recipes for enchiladas, stews, even cobblers; all using a dutch oven and some hot coals. My family is really excited to see what kind of meal will be in the pot when I lift the lid at dinnertime around the camping tables. So be adventurous on your next trip dutch ovens are really easy to use.

My dog is getting older herself, and arthritis is setting in on her, but she is still an outdoor dog through and through. From the first night I had her we have been camping pals, and she still would rather be sleeping in my camping tent than in my home.
When she was a puppy she loved making a bed in the dirt, but now that she is older I have added a soft camping pet bed to the things I pack for her. These camping pads for dogs are durable and provide your best friend with a soft comfortable place to sleep. Of course your dog does not have to be older to appreciate these beds and they don’t have to be camping. My dog sleeps in her camping bed every day! If you plan on camping in Moab or anywhere else known for slickrock, or even at locations where the ground is extremely soft or hard you should consider a freestanding tent. Freestanding camping tents are just that, free standing. These tents do not require tent stakes, which hold them down and helps create the shape the tent poles finish filling out. They also are usually dome shaped in appearance and can be found in various sizes to sleep different numbers of campers. You also have the added benefit of being able to pick them up while assembled, so you can move your camp a little if you like and give your tent a good shake to remove the morning dew before packing it away to leave.

There are so many brands of camping gear available it can be overwhelming for the new camper to decide what gear to get for their first trip outdoors for the night. Recently my brother-in-law wanted to start camping, and my advice to him was to stick with Coleman camping gear. Coleman has been around for years and everything they make will be a durable piece of gear that will be part of your camping supplies for years. For your first trip you need the basics a camping tent, a sleeping bag for each person, a camping cook stove, some flashlights, and a cooler. All of this augmented with a few things you probably have already around the house, and you will be able to get started camping. As time goes on you and you become a seasoned veteran you will learn what gear you want and need to add to your collection.

Sometimes it is very apparent when you need to filter your water on a camping trip, and other times it is not so apparent you need to use a camping water filter. It has become a sad reality that many water sources in nature are contaminated with algae, bacteria, and other disease causing contaminants. Even the cleanest looking water can contain small microbes, which can make you very sick, and these need removed before you drink any water from that source. Add a water-purifying bottle or camping water filter to your camping gear and rest assured the water you are filling your camping cooler with is clean for your family to drink.
