If you get a little extra mud and dirt inside of your tent on a camping trip it can be a little difficult to clean out if you do not know how to go about it. I always turn my camping tent inside out and let the mud dry; from there it is usually very easy to shake the excess off to remove it. Of course it is still not a good idea to put it away even just a little dirty so I use a soft wet sponge to clean the dirt out of my tent. Then I allow the tent to hang until it is completely dry before I roll it up and store it away in its stuff sack.

Most sleeping bags come with two stuff sacks and it can be confusing why to those who have never spent a lot of time camping before. The smaller stuff sack is the one you use when you are heading out on a camping trip. This back is smaller and condenses the sleeping bag down to a size that does not take up a lot of space when you are traveling. While the larger stuff sack is the storage sack which will take proper care of your bag when you are not using it. This bag will allow your sleeping bag to remain fluffed up and aired out while it is put away until you get to head out again.

It is football time and this means keeping the team hydrated during games and practice. Water bottles are just too expensive and not good for the environment so a better solution is to use beverage coolers to bring lots of water for the team to drink while they play. These Coleman coolers have a handy removable lid that makes fill up easy and a drip free spout to make getting that cup of cool water a breeze even for the youngest of players. Keep your team on top of their game with plenty of water to drink to stay hydrated.

For years I always folded my tent the exact same way, it is the way I knew it would fit into the stuff sack if folded like this. Little did I know that I was actually creating creases in my tent, which created weak points in the shell and rain fly. For the best care of your camping tents when putting them away after each use you should put them away differently each time you are done using them to avoid creating these creases. It will prolong the life of your tent and ensure you have many years of fun camping out of it.

Many tents are still in perfect condition when they are retired from use, and this is many times do only to zipper failure as opposed to the tent no longer keeping the user dry. Of course there are some things you can do to help that zipper last longer so you can get several more years out of that camping tent. Simply by making an effort to make your zipper stays clean on the tent will go a long way to helping it work smoothly for longer. Grime and dirt can cause the teeth on the slider to function incorrectly, simply keep them clean with a mild soap or a special zipper care solution and your tent will last many more camping seasons.

As the temperatures begin to fall and the leaves start to change colors many families put away their camping gear and declare the camping season over until next year. These families do not realize that they are missing out on some of the best times of year to be outdoors. Of course camping in these cooler temps requires small changes like making sure your sleeping bags are warm enough, your tent has a good rain fly to keep out those cool fall showers, and you have plenty of hot chocolate to make on your Camp Chef stove while you sit around the campfire enjoying the evening.

Shopping for the right sleeping bag for the given temperature you will be experiencing can sometimes be a little tough. Do to the varying materials used in sleeping bags and most importantly to the varying ideas by people of what is cold the rating that may work for one person may not work for another. Therefore the temperature rating on a sleeping bag should be considered as a guideline but not an absolute. If you tend to sleep cold than you may want to get a sleeping bag that is rated for lower temperatures than someone who does not. My personal general rule is I would rather have more sleeping bag warmth than I need on a trip than not enough.

If you have not looked into camping sleeping pads in awhile you will be pleasantly surprised with the newest models and the comfort they can provide during the night. For backpackers a lightweight yet comfortable sleeping pad is essential for a good nights rest. The latest camping pads are now self-inflating making them more than just a piece of light foam under your sleeping bag in the night. This will place a cushion of air between you and the ground to keep you not only more comfortable but insulated from the ground adding more warmth to your sleeping bag.

Of course the best way to clean a down filled sleeping bag is to pay a cleaner who is experienced in cleaning things filled with down. Of course this can be expensive or not available in your area depending on where you live. It is possible to wash one of these sleeping bags in a washing machine that does not use a agitator in a mild soap. The trick to getting it cleaned properly is to make sure all the soap gets thoroughly rinsed out so run the bag through the rinse cycle several times. After that dry on a very low heat setting, make sure no hot spots develop, with a couple of tennis balls in the dryer until completely dry.

No matter how hard you try and keep a synthetic sleeping bag clean it will inevitably get dirty enough that a cleaning is needed before you will want to sleep in it on your next camping trip. You can wash a synthetic bag in the wash on a gentle cycle with cool water and a very mild detergent. Also make sure that it is not a agitator type washing machine as this can damage the shell on the bag. Once washed tumble dry on a low setting and make sure the bag does not get too hot in the process by checking it frequently.

If you own your tent for several years and use it often, even if you thoroughly dry it after each use it is still probable you will start to develop mildew. You will know this based on the smell your tent starts to permanently have no matter how much you air it out. If this is the case you can still save the tent by stripping off the urethane coating and reapplying a new one with a after market product. This sounds like a lot of work so it is a decision you will have to make on whether the tent is worth the effort of saving or if it is time to get a new camping tent.

Everyone loves to have hot dogs cooked over a campfire but roasting them can be kind of tricky especially if you have kids who want to do it themselves. Trying to use a stick to roast them just means your food ends up in the dirt. Other long handled spears are too dangerous for excited kids to have around a campfire especially when emergency help is not close by. Luckily Camp Chef has a great solution, cast iron hot dog irons. These irons will securely hold your hot dogs and without a sharp point and with wooden handles this is a cooker you can trust your kids to use themselves safely.

It is commonly misunderstood that sleeping bags are supposed to make you comfortable when you are sleeping on the ground on your camping trips. To some degree this is true, sleeping bags do keep you comfortably warm but for protection against the ground you will need a sleeping pad. These pads add extra cushion between you and the ground to essentially create a mattress for you wherever you may find yourself in the outdoors. Make your sleeping bag much more comfortable with a quality self-inflating camping pad that is perfect for general camping or even backpacking.

With the cost of gas going up taking a road trip with the family is getting more and more expensive. You can still go on that cross-country trip a good way to save some money is to buy your food at grocery stores and not restaurants. Coleman coolers such as a thermoelectric model are perfect for keeping food exceptionally cold over several days even under the warmest conditions. By saving some money on your food bill you can better afford that gas to take the family on the big trip camping across the United States.

Space is always an issue when you are backpacking; you want everything to be as light as possible yet you want to retain as much comfort as you can. Many lightweight camping tents that are designed for backpacking are not as roomy as other types of tents. Of course this saves weight that you would ultimately be carrying on your back, but it can also be an inconvenience. One simple way to add a little extra room for gear into a lightweight camping tent is to use a gear loft. These handy little items add a simple hammock style shelf to the inside roof of your tent where you can stow extra gear during the night while you are out backpacking.
